2020 Topps Heritage Preview

Celebrating its 20th year of capturing the designs of the past with the players of today, Topps Heritage is back and better than ever. This year, Topps pays homage to the 1971 design which was famous for having black borders and is a favorite of many vintage collectors.

Cases of 2020 Topps Heritage contain 12 boxes of 24 packs each. Each pack contains 9 cards so one would expect a total of 2,592 cards per case.

Box loaders are considered extra bonuses that are randomly inserted in hobby boxes. This year, these box loaders showcase 1971 Greatest Moments, 1971 Topps Originals, and 1971 Topps Super cards. The 1971 Greatest Moments cards capture the year’s best moments such as Roberto Clemente winning the World Series MVP. The 1971 Topps Originals have a special foil stamp that some collectors love to collect. The 1971 Topps Super cards have some that are autographed and are highly limited to 25 or less.

The base set of 2020 Topps Heritage contains 500 cards. These cards are numbered 1-500

with the last 100 cards short printed. Cards 401-500 can be found one every three packs on average.

The typical insert sets are showcased once again as collectors of Topps Heritage are familiar with these already: Baseball Flashbacks, Then and Now, News Flashbacks, and New Age Performers. However, a fifth insert set has been added for this year — Willie Mays 20 Gigantic Seasons. Also announced as a retail only insert are 1971 Topps Baseball Tattoos and are limited to just 200 copies each.

There are several different parallel sets offered in 2020 Topps Heritage. They are: White Border, Flip Stock, and Mini. The white bordered cards are hobby only and are limited to just 50 copies each. The flip stock parallel cards are also hobby only and have a vintage feel on the front of the card and a smooth feel on the back. These rare cards are limited to only five copies each. The mini cards are a skip-numbered set of 100 cards and are limited to 100 copies each.

Chrome cards have been a staple in Topps Heritage baseball every year since it all started

in 2001 and this year is no different. The chrome set consist of 100 cards and can be found in the following formats: Base, Refractors numbered to 571, White Refractors numbered to 71, Gold Refractors numbered to 5, and Superfractors numbered 1/1. Also included are hot box exclusive refractors which are generally found in every pack inside one box out of a case.

Variation cards are also a huge hit with collectors which is why Topps is bringing them back for another year. This year collectors can find the following variations: Action Image (hobby only), Silver Team Name (hobby only), and Throwback Uniform. The Throwback Uniform cards are extremely rare and always sought after for set completists.

Topps Heritage wouldn’t be Topps Heritage without on the card autographs so this year Topps is keeping the trend of including Real One Autographs in its product. These autographs are signed in blue ink. There are also Real One Special Edition autographs. These autographs are signed in red ink and are limited to just 71 copies or less. Want two autographs on the same card? How about three? Dual Real One Autographs are limited to 25 copies or less and Triple Real One Autographs are

limited to 5 copies or less. Both Dual Real One Autographs and Triple Real One Autographs are hobby only. A special autograph set contains players that played for the final season of the Washington Senators before they moved to Texas to become the Texas Rangers. These cards are limited to no more than 100 copies each so they are highly sought after.

Another collectible set year after year in Topps Heritage are Clubhouse Collection Relics. This year there are base relics, gold relics numbered to 99, and patches numbered 1/1. Dual Clubhouse Collection Relics will feature two players on the same card and will be numbered to 71 copies each. Triple Clubhouse Collection Relics and Quadruple Clubhouse Collection Relics also make an appearance at 25 and 10 copies respectively. It is also noted that all dual, triple, and quad relic cards will have a special 1/1 patch card that is hobby only.

Do you want relics and autographs on the same card? Topps says of course you do. That is why they offer Clubhouse Collection Autograph Relic cards. These highly limited and

collectible cards have a print run of just 25 or less copies each. Dual Clubhouse Collection Autograph Relics can also be found with a print run of ten copies or less. All autographed relic cards have a special patch parallel numbered 1/1. Flashback Autograph Relic cards makes their return to the lineup as you can find these numbered to just 25 or less copies each.

Coin and stamp cards usually command a premium among collectors as they build their sets or try to collect their favorite player. This year collectors can find coins from 1971 on cards on the following formats: Nickel numbered to 15 copies, Dime numbered to 10 copies, Quarter numbered to 5 copies, and Half Dollar numbered 1/1. Stamp cards feature stamps from 1971 and these cards will be limited to just 50 copies each.

If you are extremely lucky, you may find a Cut Signature card. These ultra rare cards feature a cut out real signature from a celebrity or a baseball player. These tough to find cards will go for big dollars if a collector chooses to sell.

The release date for 2020 Topps Heritage is February 26, 2020. During recent years, Topps has always included some interesting unannounced variations in this product. It is a lot of fun to try to figure out what these variations are. This year will be no exception as Topps has already announced that their will be “other surprises” according to their sell sheet.

2019 Topps Heritage Is Coming Soon

It is that time of the year again for another installment of Topps Heritage Baseball. This year we will be celebrating the iconic 1970 Topps set design that was originally released 50 years ago. Collectors will find a mix of hall of famers, legends, current stars, and upcoming rookies. The main draw for Topps Heritage year after year is the inclusion of Real One Autographs. Topps Heritage is known for having ON-CARD autographs as you will not find stickers. These autographs are the real deal and highly collectible. Each hobby box is guaranteed to have one autograph or relic card plus one boxloader.

In order to put a set together, collectors will need to know that card numbers 1-400 are

2019 Topps Heritage Base Card

2019 Topps Heritage Base Card

base cards and 401-500 are considered shortprints. Shortprint cards are generally found one per three packs. However, there are what is known as base card parallels to keep collectors scrambling for their favorite player or engaged in completing sets that provide more of a challenge. All 500 cards will have a black border parallel numbered to 50 and a flip stock parallel numbered to 5. There will also be a 100 card skip-numbered set known as base card chrome parallels. These cards come in the following formats: chrome, chrome refractors numbered to 570, black chrome refractors numbered to 70, gold chrome refractors numbered to 5, and superfractors numbered 1/1. There will also be hot box refractors found both in hobby and retail in which every pack in a box has a special “hot” refractor. Other base card variations include throwback uniform variations, action image variations, team name color variations, mini base cards numbered to 100, and silver metal base variations numbered to 70.

2019 Topps Heritage New Age Performers

Insert cards are also chased by collectors for their master sets. These insert sets for 2019 Topps Heritage include New Age Performers, Then and Now, Baseball Flashbacks, News Flashbacks, and 1970 Topps Scratch Offs. Collectors also enjoy an added bonus inside each hobby box. Known as box loaders, collectors can find one of the following inside 2019 Topps Heritage hobby boxes: 1970 Topps Super Baseball, 1970 Poster Box Loader, 1970 Topps Originals, and 2019 Topps Teammates.

There are many different types of autograph cards to collect in 2019 Topps Heritage. Real One Autographs showcase retired and active players with cards signed in blue ink ON-CARD. Some of the cards will feature players that appeared for the last time on a Topps card in 1970. The cards will also have red ink versions also known as Special Edition autographs hand numbered to 70 or less. Another autograph

2019 Topps Heritage Autograph Relic

2019 Topps Heritage Autograph Relic

surprise for collectors to find in hobby packs are dual and triple autographs featuring cards with two or three autographs on the same card. Also, back in 1970 the Milwaukee Brewers debuted. Collectors can re-live that moment by collecting autographs from a few of the retired players from that team. Autographs and relics combined with the 1970 design make some very cool cards. Clubhouse Collection Autograph Relics, Dual Autograph Relics, and Flashback Autograph Relics are highly collectible year after year and this year will be no different.

Relic cards are always a collector favorite. Collectors can find Clubhouse Collection Relics, Dual Relics, Triple Relics, and Quad Relics in hobby and retail packs. A special patch parallel of each type are numbered 1/1 and can only be found in hobby packs.

There are a few specialty cards that collectors chase each year. Coin cards have been

popular and make their return in nickel, dime, quarter, and half dollar versions. Stamp cards return as well and are numbered to 50 copies each. The rarest Topps Heritage cards that collectors dream of pulling out of a pack are cut signature cards. There are two versions – baseball and celebrity. These cards feature players, musicians, and celebrities that were popular in 1970.

2018 Topps Heritage Mike Trout Variations

The 2018 Topps Heritage frenzy is only a couple of days old but it has already produced some interesting variation cards. Of course the Ohtani Action Image variation card is going bonkers, but a couple of cool/strange Mike Trout have popped up as well. The first is the nickname variation card of which there are several other players that have these as well. The Trout card seems strange because of all the “i’s” they put in his nickname:

2018 Topps Heritage-Mike Trout Kiiiiid Nickname Variation

2018 Topps Heritage-Mike Trout Kiiiiid Nickname Variation

The over Trout variation is the “batboy” variation card. It got that nickname thanks to the 1969 Topps Aurelio Rodriguez card that accidentally pictured the team batboy on the card and never corrected it. I’m guessing this is another Angels player and not the batboy, but I’m not sure exactly who it is.

2013 Topps Heritage Yu Darvish Base Card

2013 Topps Heritage Yu Darvish Base Card

For the thirteenth year in a row, Topps will release it’s annual vintage tribute set with 2013 Topps Heritage. The basic format has become very familiar to heritage collectors by now, with a base set of 500 cards including regular base cards (cards 1-425) and 75 short prints (cards 426-500). This years design is based on the 1964 Topps set. There are several variations of some of the cards including action image and color image variations which will only be found in hobby packs, the hard to find super short print variations which usually pay tribute to errors in the original set and Houston Colt 45 uniform variations of each Houston Astros player. We won’t know the odds on the variations until the set is released, but regular short prints will be found at a rate of one in three packs…same as last year.

2013 Topps Heritage Checklist Overview
500 Base Cards (75 short prints)
15 New Age Performers
10 Then and Now
10 Baseball Flashbacks
10 News Flashbacks
100 Chrome/Refractors
The rest of the insert, auto and relic set quantities are still to be determined.

2013 Topps Heritage Checklist (in progress)

There are new insert sets as well. The familiar ones make their return with the 15 card New Age Performers set, ten card Then and Now set, ten card Baseball Flashbacks set and ten card News Flashbacks set. New for 2013 is the Memorable Moments set which will contain cards that show great moments from the 2012 season, such as Robinson Cano going O-fer in the Home Run Derby. Just kidding Cano fans!

A couple of new parallel sets will be making their appearance in 2013 too. As expected regular chrome cards will be numbered

2013 Topps Heritage Roberto Clemente '64 Mint Card

2013 Topps Heritage Roberto Clemente '64 Mint Card

out of 1964, chrome refractors will be numbered out of 564, black border refractors will be numbered out of 64 and the new gold border refractors will be numbered out of five. The gold borders will be hobby pack exclusives. Another parallel set makes it’s debut,
the Venezuelan parallel set. The card backs on these will be black instead of orange. And last but not least is the new Heritage mini parallel set.

Clubhouse Collection relic cards form the basis of a large group of relic cards.
