2014 Topps Heritage Baseball is back for its 14th consecutive year with the product that set builders, autograph seekers, and traditionalists agree is a must have. Every year this loyal customer base looks forward to the release of Heritage and this year is no different. 2014 Topps Heritage will feature 500 cards of today’s players on the classic 1965 design. These cards feature all the biggest veterans and rookies, plus new inserts, variations, error cards, and buybacks that celebrate key events from 1965. The last 75 cards are short printed and inserted one in every three packs. Of course, there will also be Real One Autographs and Clubhouse Collection relic cards that are the staples of Heritage baseball as there will be one autograph or relic card in every box.

Parallel cards are something Heritage fans are accustomed to and 2014 is no different. The usual lineup of parallels is set for another round based on the 1965 design:

Black Backs – features the base cards with the backs in black. This pays homage to the Topps Venezuela cards produced in the 1960’s.

Gold Bordered Chrome Refractor inserts – cards from the base set in Chrome Refractor technology with gold borders. These cards are extremely hard to come by as they are sequentially numbered to just 5 and found only in hobby boxes.

Base Card variations have gained in popularity in the past few years with Heritage enthusiasts and this year proves no different. Here is what you can find:

Baseball Flashbacks – cards featuring highlights from the 1965 season.

2013 Topps Heritage Yu Darvish Base Card

2013 Topps Heritage Yu Darvish Base Card

For the thirteenth year in a row, Topps will release it’s annual vintage tribute set with 2013 Topps Heritage. The basic format has become very familiar to heritage collectors by now, with a base set of 500 cards including regular base cards (cards 1-425) and 75 short prints (cards 426-500). This years design is based on the 1964 Topps set. There are several variations of some of the cards including action image and color image variations which will only be found in hobby packs, the hard to find super short print variations which usually pay tribute to errors in the original set and Houston Colt 45 uniform variations of each Houston Astros player. We won’t know the odds on the variations until the set is released, but regular short prints will be found at a rate of one in three packs…same as last year.

2013 Topps Heritage Checklist Overview
500 Base Cards (75 short prints)
15 New Age Performers
10 Then and Now
10 Baseball Flashbacks
10 News Flashbacks
100 Chrome/Refractors
The rest of the insert, auto and relic set quantities are still to be determined.

2013 Topps Heritage Checklist (in progress)

There are new insert sets as well. The familiar ones make their return with the 15 card New Age Performers set, ten card Then and Now set, ten card Baseball Flashbacks set and ten card News Flashbacks set. New for 2013 is the Memorable Moments set which will contain cards that show great moments from the 2012 season, such as Robinson Cano going O-fer in the Home Run Derby. Just kidding Cano fans!

A couple of new parallel sets will be making their appearance in 2013 too. As expected regular chrome cards will be numbered

out of 1964, chrome refractors will be numbered out of 564, black border refractors will be numbered out of 64 and the new gold border refractors will be numbered out of five. The gold borders will be hobby pack exclusives. Another parallel set makes it’s debut,
the Venezuelan parallel set. The card backs on these will be black instead of orange. And last but not least is the new Heritage mini parallel set.

Clubhouse Collection relic cards form the basis of a large group of relic cards. Each Clubhouse Collection card contains a piece of game used jersey or bat and for the first time, there will be gold parallel relic cards that are numbered out of 99. Clubhouse Collection Dual Relics will feature one current player and one retired great with a piece of memorabilia from each and are serially numbered out of 64. Coin cards make their return as well, and the ’64 Mint cards will be the last year to contain coins made from real silver. Nickels will be numbered to 15, dimes will be numbered to ten, quarters will be numbered to five and JFK half dollars will be one of one. 1964 Topps Coin Relics will feature original player coins from 1964 and will be numbered out of five or less. Coin

collectors and baseball card collectors will be joined in he fun by stamp collectors, as the new 1964 U.S. Postage Relics will contain an actual postage stamp from 1964 and will be serial numbered. Another new set is the Esteemed Heritage Book Card set. Each of these cards are one of one and contain a bat plate, bat knob or patch.

The autograph subsets are similar to last year. Real one blue auto’s and real one red ink auto’s that are numbered out of 64

2013 Topps Heritage Stan Musia Real One Auto

2013 Topps Heritage Stan Musia Real One Auto

are the main set. Hobby packs give collectors a chance at a Real One Dual auto numbered to 25 or a Real One Triple auto numbered to five. The holy grail of auto’s are the one of one Cut Signatures.

Autographed relic cards give you the best of both worlds with an auto and a piece of game used material or stadium seat. Clubhouse Collection Auto Relics and Flashback Relics (piece of stadium seat) are numbered out of 25 while Clubhouse Collection Dual Auto Relics feature one current and one retired player, a piece of memorabilia and autograph from each, are numbered out of ten and are only found in hobby packs.

If you have opened hobby boxes before you ready know that each one contains a special one card pack at the top of the box known as a box topper. These will contain a regular box topper three card panel, a 1964 Topps original box loader which is an original 1964 Tops card that has been foil stamped with a Topps Heritage logo, or a Jumbo Box Loader which are modeled after the 1964 Topps Giant cards. Some of these giant cards will contain a relic numbered out of 25 or an autograph numbered out of ten.

With a scheduled release date of Wednesday March 6th, we will have to wait a few days linger than usual but it should be worth the wait. This years design looks very nice and autographs are supposed to be twice as easy to pull as last year. Get ready to rip Heritage fans!

So There Will Be a 2012 Topps Heritage High Numbers Set

After a brief hiatus, Topps has brought back the Heritage High Numbers set. This will be a little different from past sets as it will be an online exclusive set. The set consists of 100 cards and can be bought at ShopTopps.com. A few notable cards that will be included with the High Numbers set are Bryce Harper featuring an oversize hat which is tilted slightly in one direction, Ichiro in NYY pinstripes, former Nippon Ham Fighters ace Yu Darvish (yes, I realize he is a current Texas Ranger, but Nippon Ham Fighters is so much more fun to say!), and young rookies like Will Middlebrooks and Yoenis Cespedes.

The set has a scheduled release date of Oct. 17th. These cards are sold as a complete set and each set will also include on Real One Autograph card.

Will the 2013 Topps Heritage New Age Performers set be larger?

Ever since Topps Heritage came out in 2001, the New Age Performers set has consisted of 15 cards. Well, while looking over the preliminary checklist that Topps sent out this week, I noticed this nugget:

“New Age Performers
Features 30 subjects including the following:”

So, while this might be a misprint, until we find out otherwise we will have to assume that the 2013 New Age Performers set will be twice as large as in the past.

2013 Topps Heritage Checklist

We have begun the creation (aka educated guessing) of the 2013 Topps Heritage checklist. Only true Heritage geeks will appreciate this, so if you are one of those, take a look and let us know what your guesses are. We will continue to update this until the actual checklist is released.

2012 Topps Heritage Black Refractor

Well, after the initial rush has died down I might finally have some time to show off some of my 2012 Topps Heritage pulls.  Since I opened significantly fewer cases this year than in years past, I did not hit any of the super rare pulls, but I did get some nice cards.  I’ll start off with the black border refractors which are numbered out of 63 this year.

The first black refractor I pulled from 2012 Topps Heritage, and it came out of a Walmart blaster! Not too shabby.

I only pulled one black refractor out of two hobby cases, and it was this former Oakland Athletic pitcher:

I bought two cases of blaster boxes this year, with 16 blasters in each case. Through the first 31 boxes, I had pulled a grand total of zero autos and zero black refractors. Well, the final blaster box did not have an auto, but it did yield this nice black refractor:

A Look at 2012 Topps Heritage Before Release

The 2012 Topps Heritage set is scheduled to be released on Wednesday March 14th and if you have collect Topps Heritage in the past, you probably already know that the 2012 cards will be modeled after the 1963 Topps set (one of my personal favorites).  Packs will contain nine cards and hobby cases will contain 12 boxes of 24 packs.  All autographs are on the card and each hobby box will contain one autograph or relic card.

For the fifth consecutive year, the base set will consist of 500 cards and like the past few years, the last 75 cards will be short prints.  In addition to individual player cards, there will be multi-player rookie cards, league leader cards and World Series highlight cards.

The chrome sets will maintain the standard Heritage format with a 100 card regular chrome set (#’s out of 1963), a refractor set (numbered out of 563) and a black border refractor set (numbered out of 63).  All four regular insert sets return as well…the fifteen card New Age Performers set, the ten card Then and Now set, the ten card Baseball Flashbacks set and the ten card News Flashbacks set.  There will be a new 46 card Topps Stick-Ons set that is a tribute to the original 1963 stick-ons and there will also be serial numbered original 1963 Topps Stick-Ons in some hobby boxes.

The relic cards this year are similar to 2011, with 50 Clubhouse Collection relics, five Clubhouse Collection dual relics, ten Flashback stadium seat relics and the return of the coin and stamp cards.  There are two coin sets, the ’63 Mint set and a new JFK Story ’63 Mint set.  The stamp set is a seven card JFK Story Stamp Collection.

Autographs include the well known Real One (blue ink) and Real One Special Edition (Red Ink #/63), Real One Dual Auto’s, Flashback Auto’s and 1963 Cut Signatures.

Autograph relic sets will consist of Clubhouse Collection Auto Relics (#/25), Flashback Auto Relics (#/25) and Clubhouse Collection Dual Auto Relics (#/10).

Hobby box toppers will return for 2012 as well.  Each hobby box will contain either an advertising panel featuring a strip of three cards or a foil stamped 1963 Topps original card.

I will post more information on 2012 Topps Heritage as the release date approaches.
